Copper John

Fly Pattern

Copper John

Nymph

About this Pattern

John Barr's Copper John is one of the most effective nymphs ever created. The heavy bead and wire body get it to the bottom quickly, while the epoxy wingcase provides a lifelike profile. It's an especially good attractor nymph when run as the point fly in a two-nymph rig.

Materials

  • Hook: Nymph, #12–18
  • Thread: Black 70-denier
  • Bead: Tungsten, copper or gold
  • Tail: Brown goose biots, forked
  • Abdomen: Copper Ultra Wire, medium
  • Thorax: Peacock herl
  • Wingcase: Thinstone or Medallion sheeting, epoxied
  • Legs: Brown/black hen back

Fishing Tips

Run it as the first (heavier) fly in a two-nymph indicator rig with a smaller midge or PT as the trailer. The fast sink rate gets both flies down quickly.
