Elk Hair Caddis

Dry

About this Pattern

Al Troth's Elk Hair Caddis is the definitive caddis imitation for freestone streams. The buoyant elk hair wing and palmered body push through riffles beautifully and can be skated across the surface to trigger aggressive rises during evening hatches.

Materials

  • Hook: Dry fly, #14–18
  • Thread: Tan 6/0
  • Rib: Fine gold wire
  • Body: Hare's ear dubbing or olive dubbing
  • Hackle: Brown or ginger, palmered
  • Wing: Natural elk body hair

Fishing Tips

Try skating it during evening caddis hatches—drag it slowly across the current and hold on. Also works well dead-drifted as a standard dry fly.
