Hare's Ear Nymph

Fly Pattern

Hare's Ear Nymph

Nymph

About this Pattern

The Gold-Ribbed Hare's Ear is one of those flies that imitates everything and nothing in particular—and that's exactly its strength. The scruffy hare's ear dubbing creates a buggy silhouette that mimics caddis larvae, mayfly nymphs, and scuds simultaneously.

Materials

  • Hook: Nymph, #12–18
  • Thread: Tan or brown 6/0
  • Tail: Hare's ear guard hairs
  • Body: Hare's ear dubbing
  • Rib: Oval gold tinsel
  • Wingcase: Mottled turkey quill segment
  • Legs: Picked-out dubbing fibers
  • Thorax: Hare's ear, full

Fishing Tips

Pick out the thorax dubbing aggressively for maximum movement. Fish it with a slight swing at the end of the drift during caddis hatches.
