About this Pattern

Randall Kaufmann's Stimulator is the go-to stonefly attractor pattern for Colorado freestone rivers. The foam-like body and elk hair wing keep it afloat in the roughest water, and the yellow or orange body mimics golden stoneflies and hoppers. It's also a killer hopper-dropper fly.

Materials

  • Hook: Dry fly or stonefly, #6–14
  • Thread: Orange 3/0
  • Tail: Elk hair
  • Abdomen: Yellow Antron dubbing
  • Abdomen rib: Brown hackle, palmered
  • Wing: Natural elk body hair
  • Thorax: Amber Antron dubbing
  • Hackle: Grizzly, through thorax

Fishing Tips

Great anchor fly for a hopper-dropper rig. Tie a size 18 RS2 or Zebra Midge off the hook bend with 18 inches of 5x tippet.
