Woolly Bugger

Fly Pattern

Woolly Bugger

Streamer

About this Pattern

The Woolly Bugger is the streamer angler's Swiss Army knife. It can imitate leeches, sculpins, crayfish, or large nymphs depending on how you fish it. In olive or black, it's deadly on the Poudre River in fall when big browns are aggressive and looking for large meals.

Materials

  • Hook: Streamer 3XL, #4–10
  • Thread: Black 3/0
  • Tail: Black or olive marabou with flash
  • Body: Olive or black chenille
  • Hackle: Black or olive, palmered
  • Bead (optional): Large tungsten

Fishing Tips

Vary the retrieve—slow pulsing strips, or a hard 6-inch strip followed by a pause. Let it sink to the bottom in deep runs before working it back.
